Lancaster Select Soccer Association

Frequently Asked Questions

About

What is Lancaster Select Soccer Association?
Lancaster Select Soccer Association (LSSA) is home to Fairfield County, Ohio's United soccer teams and is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the soccer skills of our youth. Established in the 1980's we offer boys and girls that are ages U-9 through U-18 an opportunity to play a competitive level of soccer while being taught by licensed coaches.

Fees

How much does it cost?
Please refer to the "Fees and Payments" page.

How does LSSA keep costs down?
Our organization is built and operated by volunteers who love the game of soccer. All player fees and funds raised are used strictly for the benefit of the players and the association. We want to ensure players aren't limited by their ability to pay player fees. Our dedicated group of volunteers ensures these fee levels, which are some of the lowest in the state. We strive to keep the quality of soccer instruction high and fees low.

Are scholarships available?
Yes. For more information contact [email protected]

Travel/Time/What to Expect

How much travel is involved?
It depends on the season and what teams make up your division. Typically, we play teams from the Columbus area including Dublin, Grove City, Hilliard and Newark and more. There have been seasons where teams have played from Chillicothe to Marysville. Parents often use ride sharing when necessary to accommodate away travel.

When are games played?
Typically teams play two games a week during the season. Games are normally played on Saturday or Sunday and on one other evening during the week. Games that require longer travel are typically played on Saturday or Sunday.

How much time is involved?
Teams typically practice three or four times a week before the season begins and then two or three times a week thereafter depending on game schedules. Practices are anywhere from one to two hours depending on the team and are held in Lancaster.

What can I expect for my son/daughter?
Your son/daughter will be exposed to soccer concepts taught by our licensed coaches which will include team and individualized instruction. Your son/daughter will be exposed to progressive soccer concepts and skills and should improve every season. We strive to create an environment that will provide each player with a valuable learning experience, an opportunity to improve their soccer skills, an entry into higher levels of soccer and a chance to be part of a quality program.

Is it all just soccer?
While we emphasize competitive soccer, our association embraces the philosophy that the number one reason kids play soccer is that it is fun. As such, we try to make sure the soccer experience is a fun one while still a challenging one. Along with a schedule of games and tournaments against quality opponents, teams have traveled together to watch the Columbus Crew, we hold soccer clinics across the club and teams also host their own events throughout the year.

Tryouts

What do tryouts entail?
Tryouts are normally held the Tuesday after Memorial Day for U-9 through U-12 and the following Monday for U-13 and older. Tryouts are typically held at least 2 separate nights.  A player wanting to tryout will be expected to attend at least one tryout date.

We normally run a number of stations where players demonstrate abilities in such areas as ball control, passing, trapping, shooting, teamwork, and defensive concepts. Coaches will grade players and depending on performance will select players for teams. Players who are selected will be contacted.

Do players have to commit to both Spring and Fall seasons?

Teams are formed once a season and play together for the fall and spring season. It is expected that once selected for the fall season that players will be back in the spring. Specific arrangements can be made with each team’s coach, however those wishing to play just one season should make that known at tryouts.

Age Groups

What age groups does LSSA sponsor?
LSSA can sponsor boys and girls teams ranging from U-9 to U-18. The number of teams and age groups sponsored depend on the success of tryouts and coaching availability.

Player Locations

Where are the players from?
Players are from Lancaster and surrounding communities. Lancaster residency is not a requirement for selection. We strive to recruit the best soccer talent from across Fairfield County and surrounding areas.

Coaches

How are coaches selected and trained?
We expect the highest code of conduct for our coaches. Coaches apply for consideration and serve at the direction of the LSSA Board of Directors. Coaches normally serve as assistants before becoming head coaches. All coaches are expected to obtain the necessary licensing credentials and to upgrade these credentials as required by Ohio South Youth Soccer Association.

If I am interested in coaching, how do I get started?
Complete the Coaching Interest application found on the Forms and Documents page

How much do coaches get compensated?
Our coaches are volunteers. They receive no compensation for coaching, however all coaches must have the required USSF National License for their age groups. Each team receives funding for equipment as needed.

Are there other opportunities besides coaching for parents?
Absolutely! Our association is growing. We are always in need of volunteers to help the coaches administer teams and there are many opportunities available through the Board of Directors. Contact your coach for more information or send your contact information to [email protected]
